Music in a spa - reception, treatment rooms and relaxation areas

In a small salon, reception, a foot massage chair and the entrance to the treatment room sometimes share one space. In a larger spa, clients move between several rooms. Music should suit that layout: create a calm setting from the start, leave room for conversation and accompany rest after the treatment.

This guide helps you plan its presence in each space. For individual services, use the specialist articles linked below.

Reception can already be part of the treatment

A guest confirms their booking, puts their belongings aside and receives some tea. Sometimes they then sit in a chair where a foot bath or foot massage begins. Calm music therefore belongs at reception from the first few minutes. Its character can stay close to what guests hear later in the treatment room.

Conversation at the desk should feel easy. If a client speaks quietly, a member of staff should be able to reply just as quietly. Set the volume with people sitting nearer the loudspeaker in mind, especially if treatments are already taking place in the same part of the salon.

In an open space, one consistent selection can connect the welcome with the first stage of a massage. The music need not change when a guest moves from the desk to a chair a few steps away.

The treatment room: music that suits the service

A separate room gives you more scope to match the sound to a guest's preferences. Some people enjoy a clearer melody; others prefer a background they barely notice. A brief question about the type of music and volume is enough. At SoundYou, we select the recordings for our ready-made playlists beforehand.

Different treatments bring their own sounds and situations. Head Spa adds the sound of water, Kobido focuses on the face, and classical massage calls for brief conversations about comfort. We discuss their musical settings separately:

  • Head Spa and the Dreamy & Relaxing playlist,
  • Kobido and the Japanese influences of Onsen Radio,
  • music for classical massage.

Neighbouring rooms also share an acoustic space

An open door can connect a treatment room acoustically with the waiting area. If two different playlists travel through it, the client hears both at once. Keep their character similar and set the volume for the places where guests actually spend time.

Imagine a foot massage chair at reception and a massage table behind a sliding door. With the doorway open, one selection can connect both parts of the salon. Closing the treatment room makes it easier to accommodate an individual request for quieter music or silence. This is a decision about how the space works, rather than a requirement to check the music again.

The relaxation area completes the visit

After a massage, a guest may have tea, sit in an armchair and take their time getting ready to leave. A gentle background can carry the atmosphere of the treatment room into this part of the spa. That also applies to spaces other clients pass through on their way to a treatment.

To plan uninterrupted playback, see our guide to long tracks and smooth transitions in relaxing music. Our overview of five wellness music styles will help you describe the sound you want.
