A playlist for a 60, 90 or 120-minute massage - planning the time

A massage lasts 90 minutes, but the visit may be longer. The client needs preparation and an unhurried ending. If the playlist stops with the therapist's last movement, it may be too short for the whole experience.

Service time and playback time

First establish what the length in your price list means. Does it include conversation, preparation and the ending, or only the massage itself? Avoid assuming every salon works the same way.

Then include the stages you want music to accompany. A simple calculation is preparation plus massage plus rest. Plan enough music for that total, with a reasonable allowance for how you organise the visit.

Three planning examples

These figures illustrate organisation; they are neither a standard nor information about SoundYou playlist lengths. The example allows 10 minutes for preparation and 10 minutes for the ending.

Massage itselfPreparation and endingTotal in this example
60 minutes20 minutes80 minutes
90 minutes20 minutes110 minutes
120 minutes20 minutes140 minutes

If your service time already includes those stages, do not count them twice.

Check playback time and operation

Check the actual running time of the selected music and what happens when playback reaches the end. Stopping, repeating or another behaviour depends on the player. SoundYou selects the recordings and their transitions beforehand; the salon checks that playback covers the planned visit.

Avoid promising no repetitions unless the duration and playback behaviour support that claim. Even a long collection may repeat the same opening sequence if restarted for every visit.

The beginning and ending

Before the massage, music should leave room for conversation. Keep a similar character at the end to avoid an abrupt change. There is no need to assign a separate track to each technique.

If you change recordings manually during a session, consider whether that draws attention away from the client. Choosing sufficiently long prepared music beforehand may be simpler.

Several sessions in one day

Planning one visit is not yet planning a whole day. The therapist hears music for many hours, and regular clients return. Choose among several gentle prepared options and collect the team's feedback.

Read about planning music for the whole working day. No fixed replacement frequency is needed: start with observations about repetition and particular passages.

Use the same approach for a ritual with exfoliation, massage and rest. The plan should fit your organisation of work.

For longer bodywork, also explore music for Balinese massage and Lomi Lomi. Session length and musical character are separate selection criteria.

Choose music for your visits

Explore music for spas and massage, then compare subscription terms. Descriptions of use help you choose the character; check the current offering for recording availability and details.
